Manuscripts MANU15 – an interdisciplinary approach solving puzzles with historicalmanuscripts

Manuskripte sind die wichtigste Quelle unserer Kultur und Bestandteil unserer geschichtlichen Entwicklung. Neben Texten und Bildern stellen die verwendeten Materialien sowie die Zusammensetzung und Erstellung der Objekte weitere wesentliche fundamentale Informationen dar, die zum vollständigen Verständnis unabdingbar dazu gehören. In der Sommerschule werden junge wie auch erfahrene Wissenschaftler aus den Geisteswissenschaften und Konservatoren mit Kollegen aus der Archäometrie, der Chemie und Physik sowie Informatiker zum Thema Manuskripte zusammenkommen. Neben einführenden Vorlesungen in die angesprochenen Gebiete und Techniken werden in kleineren Gruppen praktische Übungen an zum Teil selbst erstellten Manuskripten mit Techniken wie Röntgen-Fluoreszenz, Multispektrale Mikroskopie, Reflectance Transformation Imaging durchgeführt.

manuSciences '15 a Franco-German summerschool in manuscript studies
combining perspectives from philology, material sciences, computer
sciences and digital humanities.

SCOPE: Manuscripts are the main source of our culture and their
historical development. The aim of the summer school is to illustrate
the interdisciplinary approaches to manuscript studies combining
lectures in history and philology with non-textual information from
materials analysis, imaging techniques, digital humanities and computer
science.

Lectures will be complemented with practical courses in small groups on
mobile instruments (e.g. x-ray fluorescence XRF, multispectral imaging
MSI, and Reflectance Transformation Imaging RTI) and on computer programs.

PARTICIPANTS: Up to 40 (max.) M.A. or Ph.D. students, researchers and
university lecturers from all countries are welcome. Active
participation and contribution is expected (including posters). The
school language will be English. Participating masters students may
obtain ECTS credit points from FU Berlin, Fachbereich Physik.
Participants interested in this option should indicate so in their
application.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT (e.g. for lodging and food) can be granted based on
the application (letter of recommendation, CV). Please specify when
applying.We expect to be able to financially support a large number of
participants.
